Merauke Sugar Group is an integrated sugar industry and an officially designated National Strategic Project (Proyek Strategis Nasional), located in Merauke Regency, South Papua Province, Indonesia.

The project aims to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar and bioethanol production, contributing to national food and energy security in line with the strategic priorities of the Government of Indonesia.

Aligned with these objectives, Merauke Sugar Group plays an important role in strengthening the local economy and advancing Indonesia’s agricultural capabilities, while driving regional economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development in Eastern Indonesia.

INAUGURAL SUGARCANE PLANTING, PRESIDENT: GOVERNMENT FOCUSED ON STRENGTHENING FOOD SECURITY

Sermayam, July 23, 2024 – The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), accompanied by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, conducted the inaugural sugarcane planting at the plantation owned by PT Global Papua Abadi in Sermayam, Merauke, South Papua. The President stated that this initiative represents a strategic step in addressing the global food crisis triggered by extreme climate change.
